Chris From DC - Oct 21st 2009 @ 01:10 pmOne of the things I love about the show is that neither Seth nor Jonathan attempt to be other than what they are. In Jonathan’s case, he had (and still has, by his own very recent admission) a very privileged life. So when he talks about working-class, he’s just coming at us with his personal perspective. I think, though, that it’s also very clear that he’s awesome.
My advice would honestly be to call him and talk to him about it. I’ve found through doing that that a lot of what he says on the show is just a snap-shot of what’s on his mind at that moment, and not necessarily representative of an overall world-view (I had issue with comments he made about 311, and he was totally awesome about it and we just chatted amicably about music for about 20 minutes).
These are two of the most honest and open-hearted guys around. I say gut it out and keep giving them a chance.
Oh, I’m not NOT gonna keep on keepin on with listening to old shows, but something about episode 80 just got to me.
I don’t begrudge Jonathan his privilege or life experiences because, duh, how could I, but I get uncomfortable when people use those experiences to make crazy sweeping statements about certain groups of people. And yeah, I know that crazy sweeping statements are basically UYD’s bread and butter, but like I said maybe I just get sensitive, especially when it comes to race and class and whatever because I’m in the minority in both of those categories.
Regardless, they really do seem like genuinely good peoples, and I’ll be sticking around.
