changing things for me at the moment

also i am wondering if people here that make music have any interest in a section here dedicated to production more and sharing tracks i guess works demos. I mean there are plenty of places to do that out here in space but maybe we could do it different somehow. i have worked with owned dicked with a lot of gear over the years and daed posts here a bit and he is a wealth of musical knowledge the like of which i’ve never seen.  i know ive spoken to a few of you before about little shits but im down to dig in deeper (wankoz) if any of you cool bros want just chill in shorts and talk about beat making .barf. Seriously though is that a lame idea ? regardless I will be updating much more often here within this section of the forums jogger related stuff when on the road etc. hope all is well. I will see seth tomorrow and send him all your love.

I am not a beatmaker, but sometimes if I get tipsy enough I will share some nonbeat recordings and then wait a solid few hours before getting virtual stagefright and deleting them. I am pro music-section and will absolutely listen to things contributed by others and less absolutely contribute things of my own.

Yeah that sounds pretty cool actually.

I’ll throw this question out there because I was never really able to make too much sense of it. Do you have experience with or advice on using Trackers?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracker_(music_software)

From what I know they’re used to make 8-bit Game Boy style songs and I was really wanting to mess with it earlier this year but couldn’t quite figure it out.

It sucks, but I’m not in much of a position to make music now since most of my stuff is in America. Even my damn serial keys to ACID are over there, so I just play acoustic now and then.

I posted it up awhile back somewhere in the forums but I’ll throw it out there again. A good friend and I made two albums under the band name The National Pool and you can check it out here: http://www.myspace.com/thenationalpool

Good or bad, I’d be interested in hearing what you guys think of it.

I also made a space rap album with the same guy. I’ll post download links to all the songs in a day or so.

I wish I had the talent to do this electronically.  Instead, I get my electro-beats wholesale from my homie DlimitR.  Accoustically, I’ll throw down soon as my band records…

Everyone once in a while I fool around with a trigger finger and Ableton Live so I would love to know what other people are up to and learn from them. I find anything to do with this stuff very interesting but also super overwhelming.

Jonathan, I would be interested to know what kind of setup of you have while you’re on stage. Also, you must have a killer music library judging from your intro and outro songs. I’ve discovered so much music because of it. You should do a podcast of just music.

Count me in. I’ve DJed for years, vinyl to Ableton! I love Music Gear. Been playing guitar for about a year and a half so if the standards are low and the enthusiasm is high then I’ll post some of my half assed noodling.

Maybe work some UYDisms into a few tracks?

Skip to 3:00 to catch the vibe I throw down. (Neighbor scene from Crooklyn)

I am not any kind of musician or dj but I would totally enjoy a music section as a spectator and admirer.

Would like a place to talk shop and post some shit. Maybe do some UYD fan collab jamz that jah could play on the cast.

Incorporating as much UYD vernacular into everyday life as possible…

Sort of fitting with the topic.

Here’s a video a guy did showing how to make Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy. It’s really interesting to watch.

It’s great to see where all the samples come from.

Loop based music can often end up sounding very flat as far as melody is concerned. Although Paul’s Boutique and Odelay still stand up whereas The Chemical Brothers stuff comes off as very 1 dimensional, imho.

Very cool post by Gary to see how ecclectic the sources were on that Prodigy track. They are on a bit of a comeback as Invaders must Die and Take me to the Hospital are half decent (now considered Old Skool Rave style) bangers off their latest record. I think the Prodigy are the only ones who can pull that steez unironically.

SO ... when you guys are looking to record something resembling a song do you find some samples, use a drum machine, or what? I am thinking of trying to use a specific track as a reference for structure but really just use it as a jumpoff point. The other idea is to take 10 great songs and combine your favourite elements from each.

I hope to post something here shortly.

I’ll try to dig some good examples of what I’ve done in the past and post them up here. Maybe I can throw it on YouTube and put that up.

When I used to make beats I suppose it went something like this:

1. Stock up on a bunch of cheap records with weird covers.

2. Go home. Drink coffee and smoke cigs while frantically listening to a couple seconds of various parts of every song on the record.

3. After a couple hours or so of that I would eventually find maybe ten samples worth spending time on. I’d make a list of each sample on paper. I never really mixed the sample together though. Each one would end up being it’s own thing.

4. Go back and listen to the samples again and pick one or two to put into either the computer or MPC to make into a song.

5. Try to make it into something worthwhile. Add other instruments, etc.

6. Come back and relisten to it in about a day and see if I still like it. If it’s still fresh then I’ll spend a lot more time on it and make it into a full song.

When I started out in college though it was more like:

1. Get drunk.

2. Throw some shit into a sampler.

3. Make a beat.

4. Write lyrics.

5. Hope I’m sober enough to pronounce words and record some rap over it.

6. Done.

We had that one post a while ago where people put up demos and myspaces, etc… it turned into a shit show pretty fast. I’m down to try again. I just started a new soundcloud jam. I’ll post something when I have it.

I’m working on a record with another beatmaker and a bassist. We’re trying to make it a proper trio live, so I’m sure I’ll have some brainteasers about MIDI and/or syncing our gear up.

Bonjourno? Fuck that we like Bon Jovi. Late!

This seems like an amazing idea. Yea sure there are a lot of places to talk music online, but I’d rather do it with a community i’m familiar with. I didn’t get started into beat making into relatively recently, but I know my way around Reason. Well, I know it enough to incorporate my guitar and bass skills into producing.

I’d also be interested in knowing what other people’s set ups are, and maybe some reviews on gear.

Are you down with NPH?

different music/artists for different emotions/times..
not many people would argue the talents of the dust bros.. but at the same time, if you were reading urb/mixmag & following uk electronic music in the mid-90s i don’t know how hearing certain joints wouldn’t at least hit you in an ephemeral nostalgic sort of way

i wouldn’t consider chemical brothers loop based music anyways tho..
