I called Haverhill High yesterday to inquire about the possibility of purchasing some sort of marker of our fearless co-leader’s tenure there. The conversation went as follows.
Lady on the phone (who sounded a little like Marcia and was almost as sweet): Haverhill High, how can I help you?
Me (in my Louisiana drawl- clearly not from Haverhill): Hi, I’m not sure to how ask about this, so um, so you know how some schools have like little plaques or bricks in a walkway with peoples’ names on them or something like that like to honor them? Like that you can buy? Do y’all have anything like that? Because, I’m a fan of this internet podcast show, like an internet radio show thing that one of your alumna, I mean alumni, no, I mean alums does. Sethro Matelli? Have you heard of him? Anyway, his fans were thinking about doing something to honor him at his high school, so I thought I’d call and see if y’all had anything like that? (I am mortified at this point, so stumbling and awkward am I sounding.)
Not Marcia, totally befuddled: Oh, no, no, I don’t think we have anything like that. No, but it does sound like a great idea for a fund-raiser in the future, though. Why, did this fellow pass away?
Me, horrified: Oh, no! No, he’s fine. He’s great. We just really, um, like him, so we wanted to maybe do something for him as an honor or something. Like a plaque or something.
Not Marcia: Oooh, well, no.
Me: Ok, well I just thought I’d call and check if you had anything like that, um, you know. Ok, so thanks anyway! Have a nice day! (Click.)
So, that was a great plan. Next time on “I shouldn’t be allowed to have a phone,” I’ll call Jah’s school and try to secure a plaque for him in the teepee where the sacred weed once resided. Stay tuned…
